Midnight Sun invests in private equity and lending opportunities, trades in foreign exchange and public markets and offers innovative securities and derivatives that fuse short-cycle returns with other financial advantages.

Short-Term Commercial Lending

Midnight Sun provides short and medium-term loans at competitive rates and on competitive terms, able to respond to loan requests rapidly and with a view to establishing long-term relationships with borrowers.

Founder First Private Equity

Midnight Sun takes direct, minority ownership positions in entrepreneurial companies, seeking to build businesses differently. Using a founder-friendly approach, we use our legal, financial, and operational expertise to help our portfolio companies accelerate their growth.

Real Estate

Midnight Sun’s real estate strategy targets both debt and equity opportunities, providing liquidity to owners and acquiring real estate on a value basis.

Special Transactions

For many reasons when selling a business a vendor typically prefers to sell equity while a purchaser typically prefers to buy assets. As a result, a purchaser often requires a substantial price discount to be induced to purchase equity rather than assets. Midnight Sun seeks to narrow this pricing gap between vendors and purchasers.

Litigation Funding

All litigation and particularly tax disputes can be expensive, uncertain and take significant time to resolve. If audited and challenged by the Canada Revenue Agency, many taxpayers choose to simply concede legitimate positions rather than dispute tax reassessments.

Midnight Sun can support tax disputes at any stage in the dispute process, from audit to court proceedings. The taxpayer maintains control over all aspects of the dispute and Midnight Sun will only be compensated if a successful resolution is achieved.

Our Story

Midnight Sun began when John and Richard were lawyers, but also entrepreneurs in their own right as investors in private businesses. Together they were partners in a forward swap foreign exchange trading business.

They began to develop strategies that achieved unique economic returns. These strategies are the foundation upon which the Midnight Sun securities and derivatives were designed.

Richard Kirby

President & Co-Founder
Richard is a co-founder of Midnight Sun with John Burghardt. Richard is a lawyer and holds an MBA from Cornell University.

John Burghardt

CEO & Co-Founder
Before co-founding Midnight Sun with Richard Kirby, John practiced as a lawyer and a Chartered Accountant. John’s practice has focused on developing innovative tax and financing strategies.

Jackie Colville

Chief Financial Advisor
Jackie is a CPA, CA with extensive experience in financial management, business leadership and directing strategy. Her leadership experiences include CFO of AltaML Inc. and Alberta Investment Management Corporation. Jackie also holds the ICD.D designation and gives back to her community through her involvement with several not-for-profit boards.
